Raising Autism Awareness as a Speech-Language Pathologist

As a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), I work closely with adults, children, and families with Autism. I decided to run the Big Sur Marathon for the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) to raise both awareness and funds for autism research. Through my work, I’ve gained firsthand experience with the communication and socialization challenges faced by individuals with autism. However, in recent years, after listening to autistic voices, I’ve realized that there is a lack of understanding about neurodivergence in our communities. This gap in understanding makes communication, socialization, and mental health even more complex for people with autism.

I believe that now is a critical time to raise awareness and educate others about neurodivergent thinking and the autistic experience, as shared by those who are actually living it. The marathon serves as a powerful platform not only to advocate and educate, but also to support autism research, which is essential for advancing therapies and interventions that can improve the lives of individuals with autism and their families.

I want my patients with autism and their families to feel supported and know they’re not alone. Running a marathon to raise funds and awareness felt like a meaningful way to demonstrate my commitment to them. As a private practice SLP, my work extends beyond communication—it’s a calling to serve and love people well through what I do.

By taking on this challenge, I hope to inspire others, raise awareness about the importance of neuro-affirming therapies, and contribute to research that can lead to better outcomes for the autism community. The marathon allows me to combine my passion for helping others with a personal commitment to advancing both knowledge and support for autism. I also love the metaphor of the therapeutic journey as a marathon.  Sometimes the road is long and hard, but the end is always worth it. I am privileged to be able to honor my clients by running Big Sur!
