Thanks to the generosity of USAA, the 2023 Disabled American Veteran of the Year, Kim Hubers, was gifted the chance to attend the 2025 Super Bowl. Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson coordinated with USAA to officially invite Kim and her daughter.
While in New Orleans, Kim had the opportunity to meet Justin, who happens to be her favorite player on her favorite team.
“Like most Americans, I love football and grew up watching it on TV,” said Kim. “So being able to go to this game with my daughter is something I wouldn’t have even dared put on my bucket list and is beyond anything I could’ve dreamed of. I am so grateful for the experience.”
But this trip of a lifetime was about more than just football—it was a moment of healing and reflection for Kim, a leader, dedicated volunteer and advocate for women veterans through DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
Her return to New Orleans carried deep significance. The last time she was there was in 2005, in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. As a soldier in the South Dakota Army National Guard, she was among many who volunteered to help with recovery efforts.
She remembers her team breaking down a door to rescue a woman trapped in her home. The woman collapsed in Kim’s arms, sobbing—she had lost everything and felt hopeless. Kim recalls that the devastation she witnessed during that mission was, in many ways, more traumatic than her deployment to Iraq.
Coming back nearly 20 years later to see the city rebuilt and thriving was a powerful, full-circle moment for her.
“Kim naturally thinks of ways to care for her fellow brothers- and sisters-in-arms,” said DAV National Adjutant and CEO Barry Jesinoski. “We are grateful to USAA for providing a much-deserving veteran with such an unforgettable experience.”
This opportunity was more than just a fun game—it was a testament to Kim’s service, sacrifice and dedication to her fellow veterans, as well as a reminder of the lasting impact of partnerships like the one between DAV and USAA.
